When asked if we could transport an oversized boiler to Swansea’s newest Distillery, we jumped at the chance.
In 1973 Byworth began producing boiler shells after purchasing a 2-pass dry-back boiler design from a long-established company, Coltman’s.
A bit of background
Penderyn Distillery’s Swansea site was to be built on the former Hafod Morfa Copperworks site. The huge Welsh whisky brand needed to install equipment that will help make the location an operational distillery and destination for visitors.
Byworth Boilers, the supplier of boilers for the distillery group reached out to JODA with a problem. How could they transport two abnormal loads, in the form of distillery boilers to Swansea for the open of Penderyn Distillery’s third opening in Wales?
As a longstanding customer of ours, Byworth Boilers looked to us with the knowledge that we can transport abnormal loads with ease, expertise and as always on time.
What counts as an abnormal load?
An abnormal load refers to any load designed to cater to the transportation of goods that are oversized, overweight or require special handling. This can include boilers, as in this case, industrial refrigerators, cabins and other oversized goods.
The journey
The logistics required in-depth planning to meet the demands of transporting abnormal loads. We always ensure that we will not be subject to delays by meeting road restrictions we did not foresee.
The first challenge was the need for a wafer deck trailer to reduce the overall height of the load during transit to ensure we could manoeuvre the lower bridges that must be met on the route to South Wales.
After completing a route survey, we ensured we submitted a movement order to notify local authorities of our intention to travel to Wales along with the desired route and time of travel.
Our slot for off-loading was 12:00 on 14th June, having loaded the day before we were prepared for a 02:00 start from our Base in Crosshills.
Our driver and escort vehicle only had till 06:30 to complete the first leg of the journey due to an embargo restricting them from moving on any public highway between the hours of 06:30–09:30.
Arriving at Ross on Wye Services at 06:15, both the driver and escort driver took a well-deserved break and waited to complete the remaining 2 hours of their journey.
The outcome
Byworth Boilers reached out to thank us for our efficiency and always, trustability in delivering on all journeys. The team worked without hiccups and arrived on site at 11:30 ready for the onsite engineer to start the next phase of the project.
